High school reform occurred when we delivered a multi-year, multi-school, high school project starting in 2007, to help more high school students stay in school and graduate. The project was called Go the Distance and we won an award for the results we brought to the participating high school students and the adults in their lives.
Principal: “It takes a lot of time of course. It takes a lot of time away from what we are here to do, but we can’t do what we are charged to do unless we have the kids ready to accept what we’re charged to do and this is a way of getting them ready. In the long run, I view it as saving time in the long run – Yeah.”
Parent: “I still want to keep in contact. I think our (parent) class our class has a nice knit community now and we we talk to each other. I never knew these people before.”
HS Student: “It also helped me with listening to other people and knowing that if you work as a team it’s better to work with two heads.”
Teacher: “Actually, because I wasn’t going to take this. I told Mr McCauley that we keep having these classes and then what happens after the class you know it just sits there nothing gets done. so even though it was a lot of hours, and we were supposed to get paid and we didn’t, I went ahead and I did it. And I am I I’m happy now. They gave us the tools to actually implement and do it, and examples, role-playing, and it’s so much easier.”
