Resolving gossip is no easy feat. It requires that people grow determined and skilled in going to one another to work things out.
Denise: There was a co-worker that I was doing something that annoyed him, and he went to his boss. His boss said, “Go talk to Denise.” And he didn’t do that. He went to another coworker and told her what was bothering him. She went to a co-worker. So we’re up to four people that are now involved in what the problem was. The problem was, none of them are me, and I was the one who really could do something about his problem. And finally somebody got to Judy and she was the one who recognized that we needed to pull together here, let’s go back. And that was in the beginning of our LifeWorks, And when I talked to him about, after it was all over with, was I said, “You took away from me the opportunity to make it right” which I happily did as soon as I knew what I was doing was bothering him. He hugged me. He realized that his first mistake was going to his boss instead of coming directly to me, and that was I think a pivotal moment. As tough as that was for all of us to go through, I think that was a pivotal moment for all of us, because it was a real learning experience that this stuff works. You just have to use it.
